Synopsis: What are the words for lesbian and gay in the Inuit language? The Inuit are an ancient, aboriginal people from the arctic regions of Canada. Formerly a semi-nomadic culture, their society had been affected by western missionaries over several generations. These include alterations to their social structure, their spiritual beliefs and their views on sexuality. Such changes had made it difficult, even perilous, for LGBTQ community to live openly and authentically, especially in such an isolated community. The last two decades, however, has seen an evolving shift in attitudes thanks to the determined individuals who are not only bringing about true acceptance in Inuit society, but a celebration of queer life.
