aGLIFF FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS

As we enter our 27th year of operation, aGLIFF has a variety of volunteer opportunities! These positions vary in time commitment and skills, but all help us achieve our goal of providing our community with special programs supporting the LGBTQI and ally communities.

How To Apply:

THEATER ATTENDANT

Position Overview:

Be the audience’s tour guide from the time they enter our theatres to the time the credits roll. Help them to their seats, and watch the movies with them (making sure everything looks and sounds good), and make sure they fill out their ballots. Did we mention that you get to watch the movies for free?

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

· Arrive on time for your shift wearing your volunteer t-shirt and a smile

· Check the schedule book for the film/theater assigned to you, initial by your name

· Grab a clicker and a stack of voting ballots

· You’ll be introduced to the back of house (BOH) manager who will basically review your duties with you again

· Post yourself outside the theater, clicker in hand, smile on your face

· As guests walk into the theater, click the clicker to count them. Periodically, theater staff and/or BOH manager will ask what your count is.

· Wait for the voucher holders to be sat and just as the film is beginning have a seat in the TA’s assigned seat, usually close to the door on the aisle

· Be sure to write down the final count of attendees to be given to the Guest Services Admin

· During the film, pay special attention to the production and sound quality. If there seems to be a problem immediately go find and notify the BOH manager. If BOH manager cannot be located please find the Crew Chief or Volunteer Lead

· About 5 mins before the film ends (you’ll know the runtime when you check the schedule book) post yourself back at the door to pass out voting ballots. NOTE: some films will have a Q&A afterwards so you might be posted at the door for up to 15mins

· After everyone has left the theater. Turn in your clicker and excess ballots at the Guest Services table.

LINE ATTENDANT

Position Overview

Are you outgoing? Are you often the life of the party? Then this is a perfect fit. You’ll meet, greet and mingle with the folks waiting in line. Keeping things positive and upbeat is your forte.

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

· Arrive on time for your shift wearing your volunteer t-shirt and a smile

· Check the schedule book for the film assigned to you, initial by your name

· You’ll be introduced to the BOH manager who will basically review your duties with you again

· If the line signs for your movie have not been put up, go get them from the Red Binder stored at the Guest Services and put them up. Inside is the badge line, outside is the film-pass and voucher line.

· As people arrive greet them and direct them to the appropriate line. You may need to show some folks where to purchase vouchers.

· The most important task a line attendant has to do is talk and mingle with the folks waiting in line. So it is essential to be cheerful and outgoing.

· When it’s time for the theater to open, the BOH manager will let you know you can release the Badge holder line first and then about 15 -30 mins later you can release the voucher line.

GUEST SERVICES ADMINISTRATION

Position Overview

Does data collecting rev your engine? Well this is the position for you! You are essential for tallying the votes after each film for Polari’s Best of Fest awards.

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

· Arrive on time for your shift wearing your volunteer t-shirt and a smile

· Check the schedule book , initial by your name

· Let the Crew Chief know you’ve arrived. He/she may have some things for you to do on the computer if the earlier shift didn’t finish.

· About 45 mins after you start your shift, a movie should be letting out. It is important to get audience members to drop their vote in the bucket. Promote and encourage voting!

· After the theater has cleared and you’ve received all the votes start sorting them and counting them.

· Log them onto the spreadsheet on the computer

· Other duties may include uploading membership information into the aGLIFF file.

GUEST SERVICES

Position Overview

You can’t help but be helpful. That’s why we want you at the festival’s Guest Services table. Whether it’s helping filmmakers find their way, or selling badges to anxious audience members, you’ve got it all covered and can multi-task with the best of them.

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

· Arrive on time for your shift wearing your volunteer t-shirt and a smile

· Check the schedule book , initial by your name

· Let the Crew Chief know you’ve arrived

· Grab a program and get real familiar with it. Keep it with you. Highlight films of various interests.

· You are there to answer questions. The most common questions are: “What time is the next film” and “What a good gay or lesbian film that you recommend “

· You also need to be familiar with what events are happening that day such as opening night party, filmmakers brunch.

· This year we will have a lounge in which badge holders can enjoy complimentary drinks – be familiar with where and what time the lounge is open.

· Be able to provide directions to festival go-ers who are new to Austin.

· The late shifts may also assist with checking in badge holders and providing them their badges.

· Other responsibilities may involve promoting memberships –TBD

SPECIAL EVENTS

Position Overview

Special Event Volunteers are the most important asset to a party. We would love to have your help setting up, ushering the red carpet, checking in guests, assisting the hosts, and be on-hand to ensure the event runs smoothly. So if party planning is your middle name this is the position for you!

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

Each party is different and has different needs. You will work primarily with the Executive Director to help plan and execute the various parties we will have during the Festival. These positions are only available to adults over the age of 21 as most of the parties will have alcohol.

Upbeat, extrovert types need only apply. We ask that you commit to at least two events.

Events include but not limited:

· Wednesday Opening Night Party

· Friday Night Centerpiece Party

· Festival Lounge through the run of the festival

· Sunday Morning Filmmakers Brunch

· Sunday Closing Night Party

CREW CHIEF

Position Overview

You have great leadership skills. You are completely comfortable being in charge and at ease de-escalating situations when need to. During the Festival you will make sure the Front of the House runs smoothly.

Essential Volunteer Job Functions:

Volunteers wanting to be a Crew Chief will need to be approved by Volunteer Coordinator. Previous Festival volunteer experience is highly recommended.

Must have the following skills:

· Upbeat, positive attitude

· Leadership skills

· Dependability

· Excellent customer service skills

· Integrity

The CC would be the go-to person during that shift. He/she would be in contact with Volunteer Coordinator when need be. The back of house/technical manager will communicate with the CC for seat counts and when theaters are ready to be sat. CC will need to be able to make decisions if/when I am not around. Example would be granting comp tickets to film makers/ badge holders etc. CC will have to be visible; rarely sitting when the lobby is full before theater is sat, mingling with aGLIFF guests.
